Re: WikiPaddling

Yup, I agree with you Ryan. I often google rivers just to find out about them for interests sake. That doesn't mean I am gonna paddle it. The same goes for watching DVD's. I REALLY like the idea of a database that can be updated regularly

Re: WikiPaddling

Oh and I dont see how this stops people from checking out the rivers themselves still...? If they dont want to look on the internet for information theres no one forcing them. Personally I think scouring the internet is half the fun, amuses you when you are at home bored and wanting to kayak. Next best thing :P

Re: WikiPaddling

Yeah, thinking of merging a wiki and a forum into one site so people are able to discuss the wiki articles.

WikiPaddling

Another thought re the rivers database idea: Rather than build it from scratch, perhaps leverage the wikipedia like capability available now days for building collaborative websites so other people can make updates to the database themselves that include dynamic content such as links, photos, embedded movies (i.e. youtube links), updates on river conditions, trip reports, dam proposals, news, others can update or correct those updates, etc. If structured well, a full non-cluttered database on rivers could evolve with many contributors.

I do note that half the fun would be going to check all the rivers out ya-self...

Re: Kinda like Oregon kayaking????

There is another side to a river data base.
That is every power company that looks at a new dam site does a feasibility study part on what data is available on that river, in the last few big cases the only written documents available have been GC's NZ WW guide book, in some because that section of the river (the Kaituna) is not the main run it does not get much of a mention in the book, the power companies draw the conclusion that as there is no written record of your back yard run, that it has no national significance as a recreational resource and is fair game to build a micro hydro project on..
So do yourself a favor if you have a back yard run that you keep to yourself and your friend. Write about it and get it onto any river database that you can as that may be evidence that helps protect it in the future as it shows a history of recreational use that can be hard to prove.
The only possible down side is that a few new people may come to share your local jem, but at least it will be there next time it rains!

Re: whakapapa

Ring 386 8113 and listen to the Wairehu Canal flow. It can give you a rough idea of how much water is around, but it's pretty inaccurate. Bear in mind that there are a few small streams that also contribute to the Wairehu canal flow (about 5 cumecs) and that water can be stored in Lake Otamangakau.

For the Whakapapa to be any good there really needs to be a fresh on the night before and this can often be hard to predict. Keep an eye on the weather - a nice warm, wet north westerly is perfect as it melts the snow.

Re: whakapapa

Yes, if it is running. Anyone know how much is heading down the intake at the moment? It needs to be more than 16 cumecs. Where are you based Dan?
