Re: aniwhenua falls incidents?

we did a club trip up there in 06 i think and our first man off went off the middle and put his back out. i then went off second and went of river right. about one meter from the wall and it seemed fine. there was about10 to 15 more runs done that weekend and had no more problems. so would say try the right side. and we are going back up this labour weekend in october will see then.

Re: Tree Sieve - Dog Leg - Kawarau River

The offending tree has moved with the high flows earlier this week. Another larger tree is now sitting on the top corner of the Island between the left and right channels. It doesn't appear to be too much of a hazard at this stage. (Although I have only seen photos).

Tree Sieve - Dog Leg - Kawarau River

17/9/08

There are two large trees lodged halfway down the puppy leg rapid on the 'Dog Leg' run on the Kawarau river, there are several smaller branches lodged between the trees creating a nasty looking sieve.

All up the tree-sieve is about 4 metres wide, there is room to pass on both sides although the hazard is in the main flow and will be very dangerous should anyone be swimming.

I'm unsure how long these trees have been stuck there.

Re: first aid kit restock

We had to spend a night out and fire lighting kit was the lifesaver on the day. Without them it would have been an even colder and longer night and things may have turned more serious. For any trip that is more wilderness these are a must along with other spare items such as an extra layer, extra snacks and first aid supplies.

Sometimes your first aid kit may be seen as a novelty and taken for granted. It is a fine line between too much weight/bulk and having inadequate resources when it comes to the crunch. This can be combated by knowing what each member of your group is carrying. Better to be prepared as the unexpected is always around the corner when adventuring!

Make wise decisions. Happy adventures!

Re: Mokau River / Little Aratiatia

There is a sive over there too, pretty nasty if you blow the move going through the slot. Its the nature of big boulder gardens. The big water that has been round this seson will have moved all sorts of stuff, some easy to see, some not.
