Re: Waioeka and Whakatane

Do a search in these fourms as Bruce Webber wrote about a trip down the Whakatane about a year or so ago....
I run the Waioeka a lot and know the river well, my favorite trip is from Koranga down to Wairata.
This is a day trip and depends on rain fall for the grade and flow, with low water it is scratchy and will take 6-7 hours and have some tight technical boating, with high water it can take 3-4 hours and be big volume and pushy fun with some good gradiant, this section is always a good grade 3-4 wilderness trip, very similar to the Motu river, probably similar it difficulty to the upper Rangitaiki but different style of river and more wilderness run.
the middle section is from Wairata down to the hells gate rapid take out (start of the Motu Challenge kayak leg) this is a fun road side run that is grade 2-3 in all flows altho it can get a few holes and get pushy is higher flows, easy to scout from the road while doing the shuttle.
the Lower section is the Motu challenge grade 2 section great for beginners similar to Aniwhenua.
This river is in NZWW book for directions to Put in and take out.
Cheers

Re: lost boat...Mokau river

At 3.4 your kayaks will have likely spent quite sometime in the re-circulating eddy river right immediately after Little Huka, then the next likely spot is about a 1/4 of the way down is a very large re-circulating eddy river right (usually filled with logs at that flow). After that there are plenty of islands to snag your boats.

The Hamilton CC members paddled the Mokau about 8-10yrs ago with the flow (mostly from the Mokau-iti down) that would have been somewhat larger than 3.4 was at the top. The actual flow at the top was 3.0m, but the flow out of the Mokau-iti was gi-normous and then the flow out of the Manga-otaki even larger still.

The last rapid was completely washed out - no rocks - massive hole centre but 10-15m downstream from where you'd expect to find it (took one paddler and spanked him hard).

Little Aritiatia literally washed out almost as well - no rocks visible at the top which typically people get out onto to inspect the rapid. Was a real hoot but most paddlers had big water paddling experience in Nepal prior to that trip.

Lost boats have also been located near the take-out bridge on numerous occasions. Wander up / down the farm land river left at the bridge.
